Vocabulary Immersion


The first method we are going to discuss is immersion. This is one of the easiest yet most effective ways to increase vocabulary range. Once you learn the proper use of immersion for learning new words, you will be able to increase vocabulary almost 7 times faster.

Using immersion to broaden your vocabulary

Let's start by talking about immersion. When you elaborate on a word, it means that you associate that word with some information, preferably information that is very familiar to you.

To illustrate this kind of association, let's take the word "disputable." You might remember a few days ago when your Dad and Uncle Bill were talking about sports, and they couldn’t agree as to which is the most popular sport in the world. This is because whether baseball or football is more popular is a "disputable" point.

Vocabulary software programs encourage you to make your own usage examples such as the one above so that you can learn words much faster and increase vocabulary. It is certainly much easier to remember the word "disputable" now, rather than just memorizing the dictionary definition, which is "open to question or challenge."

Two ways to use immersion to enhance your vocabulary

1. Use the word in several different examples.

Synonyms are words that have the same meaning. "debatable" and "questionable" are synonyms of "disputable." Antonyms on the other hand are words that have opposite meanings. Antonyms of "disputable" are "incontestable" or "undeniable."
